I used tools from the Deform tools and Mesh Edit Mesh and Mesh Display

I did reduce the poly count of the shape at the start 

Used the lattice tool

soften/harden edges tool

transform tool

Chamfer Verticies 

Combine tool

Connect tool

Extrude
